Having witnessed first hand the impact that window coverings can have to a space, it quickly become one of the first questions we ask our clients when discussing a renovation on their home. Window dressings are equally important as a rug or sofa, but theyโre often the last thing people think about. Darren James Interiors Founder and Manager, Elissa Greer, encourages homeowners to forward-plan for amazing results.
Elissa says: โWindow coverings are the easiest way to make a room look inviting and cosy, feel defined and, importantly, complete.โ
โThe real magic, when it comes to window coverings, lies in going โcustomโ and the meticulous attention to the finer details,โ she says.
Elissa and Interior Designer, Kari Horn, today share some thoughts to help with your planning.
EMBRACE A STYLE
Elissa says the choice of style in terms of sheers and drapes is predominantly influenced by a roomโs ambiance and what youโre seeking to create.
โMy obsession with beautiful fabric naturally draws me to the world of window coverings. I certainly love the sleek, contemporary lines of an โS foldโ but then equally love the luxurious puddle of fabric on the floor. Each style speaks volumes about a roomโs character as well as what our designers are striving for โฆ whether it be a modern, tailored or relaxed feel.โ
So, what styles should be used, in what rooms? Kari says it really depends on what youโre looking to achieve.

ADD PERSONALITY
When renovating traditional homes, Kari suggests mixing a few styles. โDonโt be afraid to mix and match. Firstly, respect the character of a period home by utilising feature ball rods and always puddle beautiful fabrics on timber floors.
โIn your contemporary extension, you could mix this with a modern drape with relaxed pins or a wave, which is a versatile style. A modern drape should perfectly brush the floor,โ says Kari.
She adds, โRemember to bring in trims. You can be playful with borders and colour blocking for a flourishing touch.โ

LAYER YOUR LOOK
Elissa suggests shining light on your living room and layering bedroom window coverings.
โYou can create a tranquil, serene environment with airy linens and sheers. The right fabrics will enhance the view, frame the window, and provide privacy whilst allowing natural, diffused light into the space.
โTo create a graceful bedroom haven, youโll need a layered look, complete with block outs for quality sleep. This will visually soften and acoustically enhance the space, and all the drapery mechanics can be easily hidden.โ

HARDWORKING HARDWARE
Crucial to the aesthetic and functionality is hardware. Elements include brackets, finials, and tiebacks, which can be subtle or bold.
Elissaโs advice: โBalance the visual weight of the fabric and choose hardware that complements it. For example, light fabrics and sheers work well with hidden tracks, either recessed or ceiling mounted, and this will give you a streamlined, seamless appearance. Heavier fabrics and longer curtains often require more prominent hardware.โ

PICK SOFT COVERINGS OVER SHUTTERS
While shutters have their place, Elissa and Kari prefer soft window coverings. Roman blinds often feature at Darren James Interiors.
Kari says, โRelaxed Romans give a natural look. To add height to a space, mount the headrail just below the crown, where the ceiling meets the wall. Finding unique, creative solutions can make a big difference. I really like the surprising use of cafรฉ curtains in bathrooms and laundries. They provide visual interest, privacy, and glowing natural light.โ

EMPHASISE SUBTLE TEXTURE & PATTERN PLAY
To complement your scheme, Elissa and Kari agree that texture or subtle pattern can add depth and create cohesiveness. When these fine details bring together elements in a room, itโs truly a magic moment!
